Co-author (with Linda K. Trevino) of Managing Ethics in Business Organizations: Social Scientific Perspectives (Stanford University Press, 2003); this work recently was described as one of two books marking "the birth of behavioral business ethics as an identifiable area of inquiry" (quote from page 21 of the chapter by Brief in Tenbrunsel & DeCremer (eds.) Behavioral Business Ethics: Shaping an Emerging Field, 2011). Recent research recognition includes a 2011 Journal of Management Scholarly Impact Award, the 2010 "best article" award from the International Association for Business and Society (for the best article published by an IABS member in any journal), and in 2012 a Journal of Business Ethics "citation classics" award (for authoring one of the 33 most-cited articles during the journal's 30 years of publication). My research interests primarily concern ethics in organizations, from the standpoint of both individual behavioral and cognitive processes, and organizational and institutional level policies, practices, cultures and structures. Current projects are focused on the relationship between individuals' religious commitments and their behavior in organizations; intuitionist theories in behavioral ethics (covering both the process and content of moral intuitions); social network effects on ethics in organizations; and the interplay of institutionalized practices and individual behavior in generating systemic ethical failure (as in the recent financial crisis; see (click) the Securitization and the Shadow Banking System project website).Links (including class & study abroad information)
Business Ethics Quarterly: BEQ is a leading international and multidisciplinary scholarly journal publishing theoretical and empirical research on a broad range of issues and topics relevant to business ethics, corporate responsibility, and related subjects. It is sponsored by the Society for Business Ethics. BEQ's 2010 journal impact factor is 3.256, and it ranks 2nd out of 38 journals in the Social Science Citation Index "ethics" category. BEQ is the highest ranking journal focused specifically on business ethics, corporate responsibility, societal impacts of business, and related topics. I was editor in chief of BEQ from 2005 until August 2011, and currently serve as senior associate editor. BEQ's current editor in chief (since August 2011) is Denis Arnold (University of North Carolina-Charlotte). The editor and senior associate editor are assisted by associate editors Alan Strudler (Wharton), Andreas Scherer (Zürich), Guido Palazzo (HEC Lausanne), Bruce Barry (Vanderbilt), Jerry Goodstein (Washington State), Heather Elms (American), Wayne Norman (Duke), book review editor Al Gini (Loyola Chicago), and managing editor Elizabeth Scott (Eastern Connecticut).
