Welcome to the home page for the Lisbon University Institute Exchange Program with the University of Delaware. Lisbon University Institute is the largest business school in Portugal. The initials in Portuguese in for Lisbon University Institute in Portuguese are IUL. IUL and UD have established a student exchange agreement allowing UD students to spend a semester studying business subjects in Lisbon. This program is especially targeted for students in the UD Finance and Business Administration Departments, and can likely be made available for Economics students, too. Students registering for this exchange would pay only UD tuition, travel, books, and living expenses. In collaboration with UD and IUL administration, students would work out an approved program of study for a semester in Lisbon. Course credit would transfer back to UD. Many courses in business (and especially in Finance) are available in English. Historically, IUL has been called ISCTE, for Instituto Superior de Ciências do Trabalho e da Empresa (an unwieldy mouthful, translated more or less as "Higher Institute for Business and Labor Studies"). During the name transition, this often leads to the letters "ISCTE-IUL." You will sometimes also see the initials IBS, for International Business School, on some specific programs. Watch for announcements about information sessions during Fall 2011. In the meantime, please contact me directly at laux@udel.edu to express your interest! Please get in touch. I would love to tell you more! Here are some links to help you learn more about ISCTE and this program. Introductory slide show on ISCTE-IUL Business School Lisbon. This is a bit outdated now, but still informative in a general way. Lisbon University Institute's Business School main web site in English. A good place to start exploring. There is also an older site, partly in English and partly in Portuguese, which may be interesting---though not as helpful, in my opinion. IUL's program for international programs of all types. This is the front page of the Internationals Programs web. A good place to start looking around is the section for International Exchange Programs. There is a link on the page, or use this direct link. In that area, you can find a lot of details, including the list of recent and expected courses in English. (The page at the direct link is the one most relevant for U.D. students.) International Student Residence Hall brochure. This is where I suggest that visiting students stay, though past UD students have more often chosen to rent an apartment in the private market. This residence hall is a refurbished monastery---it is quite beautiful. I have visited there and met students from Europe, Africa, and Asia. It is an English-speaking environment. It has kitchen and laundry, etc. Living there costs in the range of EUR 200 per month, last time I checked. IUL'ss Master of Finance program in English. This is a pre-professional master program. In the European system, that means that the first year students come after 3 years of university---like a US undergraduate senior. Thus, the fall first year of this program could be a great match for a UD senior finance major. I teach a bit in this program. Other profs tend to be European (Portuguese, Italian, Czech, ...) , but mostly schooled at universities in the US or in non-Portuguese Europe (for example, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, University of Lausanne-Switzerland, Bocconi-Italy). Slides on IUL Exchange idea for use in UD Master of Finance student meeting on August 25, 2010. IUL's Finance Department page. Some of this web is in Portuguese, but you'll get the idea. An informal "tour" of the Univerisity of Lisbon neighborhood, that I wrote/photographed for the first UD students to visit ISCTE in 2006.
